The black block letters on the white marquee read Harley-Davidson Dark Custom. Anxious journalists filled the taut, dark confines of the Viper Room Saturday night in anticipation of the unveiling of The Motor Company’s latest endeavor. Guns & Roses’ ‘Rocket Queen’ echoed from the cave-like acoustics of the famed Hollywood club as a DJ kept the vibe on high. The circle around the motorcycle sitting in the middle of the dance floor under a shiny black veil tightened as Willie G. stood to introduce the newest softail, the Harley-Davidson Cross Bones.
Applause filled the room as Willie G. and son Bill, Harley-Davidson’s V-P, lifted the veil. The bike is a real looker, lots of springs and high handlebars. Mini-apes drape over a sweet custom-style dual tank. A shiny Springer on a fat knob of a front tire gives the front end a brutish stance. The fat-bottomed leather solo seat has dual springs and a metal pan design that dates back to the 30s. The retro feel of the bike is reinforced by the bike’s gloss black round air cleaner cover and old-style half-round rider footboards.

Funny thing about negative H-D comments. I’ve read them for a long time, but H-D just keeps going strong. I remember when all the Japs dissed the V-twin. Now look around. i have to agree..not to mention that bikes looking like this have been around for years and built by “old school” builders over and over again. The basis of Harley bikes is fantastic but attention to detail is poor, simple (eg. bolts, plastic parts, shifters, stock everything that bolts on). innovation not renovation (and that bike is ing ugly in real life..)

Wow, I’m so excited to spend even more money for a springer softail that has a sprung saddle. Just buy the ed softail and put a solo saddle on it. And whats with the gay plastic crap under the seat? They couldnt even come up with anything better than a cover to hide the stock seat mounts and they use the same fender with the impression for the stock seat. They missed the mark with this one. Dont bs us with a rehash and call it a new design.

This is kind of neat, but it strikes me as a little corny. For this reason, I would be hesitant to buy one. Maybe it’s just because my uncle builds old Harleys from original parts and he has at least one that looks just like that, only a lot less silly, much cooler and it’s red.

No kidding!!! Why bother with the whole engineering thing? Why bother with new models and new features? Why bother with new technology and performance? Why bother with ANY of that when you can re-pop 20 year old parts, slap the HD logo on it and sell it by the ounce like gold! I swear, you could sell a lump of dog if it had the HD logo on it. You could probably get a couple hundred bucks for it too!
