How bout that! A question everyone gets right!
All I can add is, if you have a hard time remembering, ( you probably shouldn’t be on the bike), To shift up, pull up. To shift down, push down. Thanks for the points!

Federal law requires all new motorcycles sold in the USA after the late 1960′s or early 1970′s to have standardized controls. The standard is: Shifting with the left foot, Neutral is between first and second. Push the shift lever down for first and lift it up for higher gears.

Also, the clutch is at the left hand; front brake and throttle at the right hand; and rear brake is at the right foot.

As of 2006 one down from nuetral for first then jump up past neutral for 2 through 6….

Hey… Jet doc… If Federal law requires all new motorcycles sold in the USA after the late 1960′s or early 1970′s to have standardized controls… then why are twist shifts and jockey shifts the hottest thing right now……Because there is no law and people like clean handle bars.
