It’s important to …
It’s important to turn off ABS and Traction Control in the dirt. ABS gets completely confused and though I haven’t ridden in the dirt with TC, I suspect that it’s a huge disadvantage.

The winglets are …
The winglets are stock 1200 GS Adventure Winglets. You can get them from any BMW dealership.

ABS for off road does not work. The dirt and constant changing traction conditions of off-road riding confuses the ABS mechanism and it’s a mess to ride.

Hi Doc, excellent video! I’d like to take your advice on the winglets. Can you tell me where you got them? Also, just curious, why are you against the abs for off road? Thanks

Hello! Great video. …
o! Great video. Thanks! I am waiting for a 2009 GS. Where did you get the lower-fork carbon protectors? And the handle to lift the bike (the one installed close to the passenger’s foot-peg)?
Thank you in advance.

The 1200 GS is a …
The 1200 GS is a taller than usual bike as is the KTM Adventure which is another good choice, but each has it’s advantages and disadvantages. I do believe the GS is a bit taller than the KTM though.

The adjustable …
The adjustable handlebar bolts are for Wunderlich. Also, you may want to just adjust your handlebars forward a bit to see how it goes. Also, I find standing with the balls of my feet on the pegs help too. Grip the bike with your legs, bend your knees and hunch forward to balance yourself over the bike is good too.

Hi Doc! I am a …
Hi Doc! I am a great fan of your work. What you’re doing is wonderful! I am looking into purchasing a motorcycle and I don’t know where to start. Since I am so tall I was thinking the GS but are there other ones out there that you would recommend that would fall under the “Dual Purpose” category. The bike would mostly be used for riding in the cities. Has any of the GS models been recalled by BMW or is that just a rumor? Thank you Doc!

Hello Doc, thanks …
o Doc, thanks for you work. Verny nice GS. I have a 08 and in less than a year have put 18000 miles on it, i cannot get off but when I stand on off road it is uncofortable. Where can I get the adjustable pinch bolt levers you show, I think that would be so useful.
Please let me know.
thanks again
Jaime

Sounds like you may …
Sounds like you may have a leaking main seal which puts oil on the clutch. If so, it’s only going to get worse until it’s fixed. BMW should fix it as I believe it’s a know problem.

The play in the drive train is a separate issue. Some play is normal. For example in first gear, low speed, if I jerk the throttle a bit, I’ll get that clunk. Under normal riding, I don’t get it.

If it’s clutch …
If it’s clutch smell you’re smelling, then you should be able to feel it slip. If the revs go up higher than the rate at which you’re accelerating, then your clutch is slipping. ’05 1200 GSes are known to have had teething problems. Time to bring the bike to your mechanic.

Doc: I’m afraid I …
Doc: I’m afraid I may have a clutch problem, and just don’t want to admit it. But I may as well raise it here.
After riding I smell clutch, more so than break pad smell.
I also feel a clunk if I accelerate, then decelerate in first gear. Thinking that there is some play in the drive shaft.

I did test drive a new r1200gs, and didn’t recall having as much clunk or smell.

Any thoughts or suggestions? The bike is an 05, bought a couple of months ago with ony 5400 miles, I’m at 6200 now.

It’s personal …
It’s personal preference. I don’t mind sliding the bike and can stop pretty well on the street. Also when I do dual sport rides, I don’t want to have to stop to turn off my ABS.

Of course the bike being $1,000 cheaper and 15 or so pounds lighter is a plus also.

thank you _ I am exactly your height and inseam. I am getting a gs and want to see how you compensate for height. I want to take my wife with me so I am curious how you keep the bike upright when a passenger is getting on. Thank you.

Hi Doc , I am …
Hi Doc , I am curious as to why you have disabled the ABS on your bike , has it caused you any problems?

mygif
docwong said in August 9th, 2009 at 4:39 pm

No, I would still …
No, I would still get the un-lowered version because I still want all the suspension. With regular street riding, touring and easy dirt riding, I don’t have any issues with the height, being 5’7″ with a 30″ inseem. The only place I get into trouble is in tighter more technical dirt sections where dabbing is an advantage, but I can live with that.

I’ll do a video on handling a bike that is too tall for the rider and go over what I do to compensate for my height handicap.
