An historic clip of film with significant interest because it captures the very 1st time Kevin Schwantz ever climbs aboard & races a 500cc 2-stroke Grand Prix bike.
The bike was actually one of Barry Sheene’s Old Race bike and had been sitting collecting dust in a museum !
They took it out threw on some new tyres and engine bits and then Sheene actually paid for Kevin to fly back over from Texas – out of his own pocket, to do this race.
Barry had watched Kevin the previous weekend at the Transatlantic Challenge @ Donnington Park and had been VERY impressed – as we all were.
other riders in this race were:
Roger Burnett – Rothmans NS Honda 500
Paul Lewis – the ‘Angry Ant’ on a Skoal Bandit Suzuki 500 with carbon frame and peaky ‘SQUARE-FOUR’ engine.
Alan Jefferies
Keith Huewan – now a successful commentator in the sport
Trevor Nation – Rothmans NS500 Honda
Mark Phillips – affectionally known as ‘Captain’
As exciting as the race is, you cant fail to be slightly disapointed when you see they are only setting laps of around 52.0 – 54.0 seconds.
I can recall my own laps of Mallory on a RD350LC in the LC Formula races of late 80′s as being around 57 seconds !!
Enjoy the race !
