I would think they would be selling small motorcycles, with great gas mileage left and right!
Evidently the manufacturers don't see a market in economy bikes at $3.80 a gallon. Wait until gas hits 8 dollars (like it is in Germany or $9.00 a gallon, England or $10.00, Turkey. I do think the bike manufactures should work toward 60 mpg and have good preformance.

some of them only make so many of the smaller ones per yr. honda ofers the rebel 250cc and most dealers are out of them and won't get anymore till the next model yr starts being built. and just my luck as i was planing on buying one.

that is not what the people want, the want power and style, not a moped, but they have become more stlyist,and some of those motocycles get 50-75mpg anywas, give it a few years

I have heard a couple of commercials talking about fuel efficiency, but I think you have a good point. Until now, people bought motorcycles for the fun factor and great mileage was simply an advantage. It could be due to a higher cost of ownership (insurance/services), but I don't know for sure. Great question!

their is not a lot of money in small bikes they make all their money in big bikes and a lot of people steal buy them. and always will just like big cars.

They want you to by their big ones with all the bells and whistles. Look at Kymco and Hyosung both are good quality motorcycles and scooters and much cheaper than Honda,Yamaha and Kawasaki's. The biggest they make are 650 and 500 in other countries they are the way to go. Only been in the states a few years. Kymco has built rides since 1963 and use to build Honda motors up to 150cc Hyosung did for Suzuki. They are not cheap Chinese junk and the worst mileage is 60 mpg. One more thing Honda rebels are not even close to a good match for these. These are far Superior to a rebel.

When it comes to selling a product there is always 2 sides to pushing the product. The first being the feasibility of manufacturing the products and the second being market demand. Clearly motorcycles exist so the first part is not an issue. Market demand is clearly the problem. one barrier to overcome on the demand side is the safety of motorcycles. people that do not ride motorcycles are reluctant to get on bikes. In 100% of driving situations cars are safer than bikes. another thing to consider is the inconvenience of seating a maximum of 2 people. The last thing to consider is the cost of a motorcycle compared to a car. The price of convenience, safety, and comfort comes in at as little as a few thousand dollars in the form of a car.
So who do manufacturers advertise to? They advertise to people that have no reservations about riding motorcycles. The gas savings of bikes over cars is a generally well known fact. Bike manufacturers know this so why waste advertising airtime on converting people to ride bikes as opposed to those people in the 21-35 year old age range that are riding or would consider riding a motorcycle.

Bill, sadly here in the UK we've already cracked the $10 a gallon thing. I did a quick conversion from litres (dang, liters!) into US gallons and came up with something a shade over ten bucks. It hasn't happened everywhere here yet, but it's going that way.
Our government loves taxing the crap out of fuel- diesel is even more expensive…
oh yeah- $3.80 a gallon? You lucky, lucky bastards…
